View Full Version : Instant Info... Honest or Modern-Gossip?

Your innocent neighbor who offered to baby-sit the kids... an ex-prostitute? This girl your interested in a child-beater? Now we know. Search for 'em. And this technology can only be good, right? Now you know the 'honest' truth. And so do they...
A good, 'honest' conversation could now easily become a thing of the past. Recorders and cameras + internet... it could cause problems.
So now we can protect ourselves and if we have them, children. This is more than likely worth the cost, for now... But if you have ever had the feeling that you shouldnt say something around someone and made up a different thing to say instead we are now just lying. If you have ever accidentally seen inside edition you know what i mean.
I am obviously over-exaggerating it out here, but many will likely be able to see my point: Are we just lying to ourselves in this new-found safety?
Plus our new sources can in some cases be forged... heard of the wiki scandal (dont make this post specifically about that though... though its okay to mention) ?
My Position? Despite how it sounds... I dont personally think it is bad now.. but i do believe it has the potential to become a he-said, she-said fiasco if we dont watch it.

Why He said/She Said, why not He/he, or she/she, or they/them?? aside from that, it is simple enough to tell the difference between "I went to this place, and experienced that" and "He said to me that he had gone there, and done that"
One is Gossip, the other isn't.

He said, she said is like two little kids. The older brother goes, "She said I was a stink-face." Then the younger sister goes, "Only after he said I was a dum-dum"
Its a common expression really.
The point is is that we get much reliable information from our technology. But we can also use all of the very same stuff to limit each other's communications as in today's world everything you can say can be later used. Its like when your afraid to tell your friends something, like who you have a crush on while in middle school for fear that they will tell her. Amongst them it is fact and when they tell others, etc.
Now, we can get this kind of info from recorders, etc.
And put it on internet etc.
The problem has always been here, but not it is becoming increasingly in the spotlight. How has our technology limited us fear of being traced?
(I realize this may need further clarifications... )

Its a common expression really. It is sexually Prejudiced.

Its like when your afraid to tell your friends something, like who you have a crush on while in middle school for fear that they will tell her. Amongst them it is fact and when they tell others, etc. That is a Limit that you place upon yourself, as we all need to, as "Freedom of Speech" IS NOT a guarantor of Absolute "Freedom", as in, you are not allowed to threaten a Sitting President or you will be arrested for it, for Saying it sooo...........
Now, we can get this kind of info from recorders, etc.
And put it on internet etc. Yup!
The problem has always been here, but not it is becoming increasingly in the spotlight. How has our technology limited us fear of being traced? The problem was never as Travel-Able, the face of the world in on the net, and your last question, if I can guess at what it reads as, limited our fear? no....but if someone is looking for you, knows how, you can basically be traced in absolutia especially if it is someone who is Financially capable....so......

okay... first... not meant to be sexist... i think you know what i meant
and.... second... i completely agree with you... im just wondering if anybody sees this as possibly debilitating... a possible future of no privacy (gross exagerration, but yeah...) im just wondering if there is anyone out there that is actually worried about this?

O.K. Firstly your example of she/he is NOT following your thread's title, the Idea of Gossip V Statement (in your supplied example, both are making statements, ergo it is a V's situation) so it is not supported by that example.
As for the 'no Privacy' well it is all still 'private' inside your head, so just don't "express" it (tell) and it will remain Private 'tween you and the Creator....the rest? well, that was dealt with by one of the Net's Guru's Back in the beginning when he said something like "Privacy? Yup, It's Gone, get used to it!"
Privacy isn't probably the issue of the future though, survival is, and at that point, you would want all of the available knowledge that would be useful towards that end....
Does that help? (As answer, not counsel)
P.S. As for 'Knowing what you meant' well, generally (I) do not assume, so 'knowing what you meant' is more up to you, and the manner that you express yourself, then me. ?

The argument you guys have above is a good example of how information on the internet can be taken out of context by some people. I really don't think you meant any harm by your comments but it can be viewed as offensive to some. One problem with this loss of privacy is you could be having an online conversation with somebody that gets 'screened' (patriot act/ etc...) The conversation gets misinterpreted and all of a sudden you are a bad person or criminal because a few people decided to interpret your innocent words in the wrong way.

First, parsons is an idiot. If he's offended by a he said/she said comment, which isn't even sexist, since it includes both genders, then I think he deserves to be offended. It's a FIGURE OF SPEECH.
Second, the internet is not going to cause the downfall of privacy. It's still far too difficult to try and spy on someone for the explicit purpose of putting information on the net, although there are some sites devoted to essentially doing that for ex girlfriends and boyfriends (it's pretty stalkerish). Generally though, the information you're worried about is more likely to be collected by thte government on a CCTV

YUP and that is what make it sexist, but apparently you cannot see/imagine/think nor understand that .....so, the Idiot is being 'revealed'?
There are an enormity of "Figures of speech" that ARE offensive....Idiot(?)....

CCTV? Information? Privacy Information, you mean they can read your wallet from one of those cameras?? HUH??? your credit card numbers?? your phone bill accounts??? WOW technologies come waaaaaaay farther then (I) know/knew of .....
It is pretty easy to spy on someone if you have the time and the money, and the Net only exacerbates the potentials for damaging releases to a Public forum, a WIDE international Public forum COMPLETELY previously un-available

To be critiqued for internet usage by Mr. Robin Parsons is quintessential hypocrisy.
There are few persons that so consistently misuse the internet for personal biases, misinformation, and misunderstandings of what others are saying on the internet than Mr. Robin Parsons.

Hence: On the IGNORE LISTYou never seem to ignore posts that you insist are on your ignore list.
There was an issue concerning hypocrisy that was raised in the post prior to your last post, which you, as usual, did seem to ignore . . . while continuing the practice.
