ok, so, the log im working on is log base 40 of ((600)(400))...
so does this make it (log base 40 of 600)+(log base 40 of 400) then making it:
(log 600/log 40)+(log 400/log 40)
correct?

Yes, if by just "log" you mean "log base 10" or "natural log" or, in fact, any base, then log base 40 (x)= log(x)/log(40) so what you have is correct. Of course, that is exactly the same as log((600)(400))/log(40).
